Understanding Colour Trends: How Are They Predicted?
Each year, interior colour trends are intentionally chosen through a curation process. Global leading industry players often play a significant role in setting the tone for the design industry. Colour authorities and specialists conduct comprehensive research, analyse global influences, and collaborate with experts to identify the colours that will shape our homes, fashion, and other sectors. These colour predictions help suppliers and manufacturers design seasonal collections and production processes.
Exploring the Importance of Colour in Interior Design:
Colour plays a vital role in creating a harmonious living space.– something I am incredibly passionate about during the designing stage of a project, whether that's curating a cohesive colour palette for a whole house or picking out the perfect shade for a cushion cover; these details can make or break a room. While every colour has its place in the home, it's the tone of colour that evolves over time that truly elevates your space for a fresh and exciting new look.
Here are some tried-and-tested paint colours that are my go-to's and some evolving tones that can help simplify your next decorating project!
Achieving The Timeless Neutral Colour Palate
Moving away from the grey colours and grey tones we've been embracing for several years; we are seeing wheat-based and yellow undertone, which works incredibly well with the natural look of natural wood rattan, soft sheers and linens and Boucle textures, creating a warm, calming and serene atmosphere that is both elegant and comfortable. Keep the look monochrome with light textures and finishes of the same tones, or contrast this with deep earthly tones or bright pops of colour.
My reliable and tested colour choices: EarthBourne Paint Hopscotch for an off-white, Cadogan Stone from Mylands, a winning all-rounder, or a stronger neutral with Farrow and Balls String.
Playing with Blues
The two prominent blues shining through are a fabulous contrast of a soft, fresh, silvery blue, calming and fresh to drench the walls. In contrast, a vibrant cobalt blue with a violet undertone works well on kitchen units and fitted furniture for a bold look—contrast with other bold colours or white.
My Reliable and Tested Colour Choices: Light blue: Hawkesmoor from Mylands and Farrow and Balls' Sardine. Bold Blues: Farrow and balls' Blue Maize and Mylands Wine Dark
Green Remains on the Top
Green remains a popular choice for any room because it perfectly complements many other colours. While the deep olive and forest green tones still have their place, the latest trend is a revitalising mid-green with a slight yellow undertone and a slightly minty freshness. You can also experiment with rich dark, earthy green tones, which would be a bold statement for colour-drenching a room or a statement room
My Reliable and Tested Colour Choices: Lick Paint, Green 8, Artillarty Ground from Mylands
Decadent chocolate and earthy rusty reds
Dark neutrals are the powerhouse of colours and work anywhere with a light neutral tone, so don't be mistaken; all neutrals are soft and bland. If you're looking for a dark neutral, select a colour card with five or six tones of the same colour to find the perfect pairing shade. The richness of these tones is unparalleled - move away from grey undertones and embrace rich chocolate and liquorice tones with a yellow base.
My Reliable and Tested Colour Choices: the sweet tr collection from Little Greene and Mylands Amber Grey.
Feeling Peachy and Perfect Pinks: 2024 Color Trends: Peach Fuzz Takes the Lead
Whilst Barbie pink to deep raspberry/mulberry hues will still turn heads in 2024 and are on the rise for being the top colours for this year's bedroom, kitchens are the winning areas.
However, this year's colour authorities are switching things up to a peachy tone called Peach Fuzz. Described as "an appealing peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange," this colour inspires belonging and a sense of calmness. The report predicts that the 2024 colour palette will consist of muted orange and salmon pink tones that complement a range of other colours, including neutrals and more vibrant hues such as lavender, teal, berry, and mint green.
My Tried and Tested Colour Choices: Lighter and airy tones: Farrow and Balls' Setting Plaster and Powder 3 by Paint Library. For rich, deep tones: Bamboozle from Farrow and Ball, Silk Kimono from Warner House
Remember Choosing Colours for Your Home: The Importance of Personal Taste
Colour is a highly personal experience, just like art. What one person finds appealing, another might not. I find new peachy tones warm and nostalgic, and they can be used subtly yet elegantly or even paired with clashing shades of mint green, teal, or berry. I'm excited to incorporate these colours into my design schemes this year for my client projects and even my own home.
It's important to remember that while expert predictions and opinions can be helpful, your personal taste and individual style should always be the ultimate guide. Opt for colours that bring you joy and reflect your unique personality - more importantly, have fun choosing!
